Rather striking, with the winter sun picking out all the colours, and it looks very neat too, with a very tidy garden. 1298 Malvern Road Malvern. It’s pretty simple actually with just that massive vertical fin, some stripes, and brick quoins round the entries. It was built in 1939, probably designed by the builder WH Bruce, for Mr & Mrs Reed, from Brunswick – this was a time when mum and dad and often just mum, and especially widows, invested in flats, through a builder or real estate agent who organised everything, before shares got popular. In this case it’s just four flats, all the same I think, with one bed and a dining room as large as the lounge, for young couples or singles. I’m a bit surprised it’s heritage listed individually given its ordinariness, but it is very appealing.
