Unnecessary compromise

Unnecessary compromise

December 2025

This place on Beaconsfield Parade Middle Park was built as a house in c1910 in typical Edwardian style, then greatly altered when it was converted to flats in c1931. It was graded contributory to the heritage precinct, though you could have argued it was too altered. I saw it 2021 when somehow it ended up mostly demolished except for the the east wall and chimneys and the front ground level. A whole new front emerged in contemporary style, and all rendered – it really is a case of why retain anything ? It certainly doesn’t contribute to a heritage precinct any more. No doubt something happened along the way, and the permit for ‘rear extension’ turned into this, an example of the vagaries of planning. Update : it’s by @perkins_architects
