Moonee ponds creek

Xmas 2025

A walk along Moonee Ponds Creek in Kensington on Christmas Day – the creek and its bridge from Racecourse Road to Dynon Road is one big heritage precinct !

I knew the bridges were somewhat significant, so I took lots of pics. The Macauley Road one is 1923, and designed by the Monier Concrete Co, run by John Monash, interesting choice to have so many posts and beams. It’s got a rather thin and retro looking cast iron balustrade, made safer with concrete infills.

The creek itself has some concrete and bluestone channels but now hidden by successful re-wilding, an increasingly popular thing.

The Racecourse Road bridge dates from 1928, and it’s more typical of the period. And you get a nice view of the huge 1956 Victorian Producers Cooperative Woolstore (possibly designed by the engineer Cyril Hodspeth). And all of this happens under the hulking concrete of the 2000 Citylink freeway viaduct, which was clearly just an engineering solution with no design thought at all.

  1. Thanks for showing us what many pass daily and take no notice. When taking a train trip to the zoo, Flemington Bridge Station is quite interesting and I’ve never left the train to investigate what is below.
