This is the old stairs off Spencer Street that went down to join the underpass under Spencer Street Station, closed since it became Southern Cross in 2006. It looks olde worlde but i think the railing is 1980s heritage style, with a City of Melbourne crest, so they probably built it round a 1960s stair. The underpass is all still there, but full of water storage and other stuff, and only for staff, but not this stair obviously. I’ve often heard the view they should re-open the subway, but sounds like it’s full of stuff, and of course the ramps are steeper than allowed now. But it would be good to have another entry like this one but bigger, leading to a wider subway, to take some of the pressure off the Collins street crossing.
