Back lane cottages, South Melbourne

Back lane cottages, South Melbourne

September 2026

Never seen this before! Two Victorian houses at right angles with a kind of shared front yard. They’re in the elbow of an L shaped side street in South Melbourne, Queen Street-Emerald Street, joining Ferrars to Dorcas. There’s a bunch of tiny houses, including three recent ones that fit right in – wonder if they replaced cottages ? One is a do over of an altered house squeezed next to the right angled ones, looks nice.

Then across the road there’s a bunch of 5 houses, the corner with polychrome brick but only on one side, then there’s a couple of very nice bluestone ones, and between is a red brick probably 80s one with there a great convoluted plan round the circular stairs, with an inset entry that looks a little like a lane. At the north end there’s one that bulges out in 80s cream brick, modestly sized, allowing a good side garden.

Round the corner there’s a house with very ramshackle upper floor, what the hell is happening? Then out on Dorcas there’s a trio of houses right on the street with steep steps up off the street.
