Repost 2020: Managed a snap of this landmark on Punt Road at Toorak Rd from the car passenger window, a #drivebyshooting. This was the South Yarra Club hotel, built in 1892, just as the 1880s boom was crashing. It replaced a nice weatherboard predecessor built c1853, the first pub in the area. A fine building for this busy corner, and what’s more quite intact, all the ground floor included, which is unusual. Prob lost some urns from the parapet. From the 80s it had a few names, Hatter’s Castle (1986), Trakkers Inn, and the Arcadia (1995). The big neon sign is a rare survivor, not heritage listed. Info and pics courtesy of the Stonnington History Centre and @library_vic, night shot thanks Marc Morel.
