Larger than average shops, Bridge Road Richmond

Original post 9 March 2020

Built in 1908, this impressive block isn’t your usual shop downstairs and shopkeepers house upstairs; there’s a huge space upstairs too with big timber trusses, all I could find was that it was built as a drapers, so I guess it was like a big two level store full of stuff. There’s a couple of other places on #BridgeRoadRichmond that were built as mini department stores, so I guess this strip was a more than average shopping destination.

This place long occupied my Space furniture (I think).

On the opposite corner is Toole’s, 1886, #BridgeRoadRichmond; the right hand part appears to be abandoned above the ground floor, and the parapet pediment isn’t centred ‘cos there was once another bay.
