Southgate Centre to be demolished

Original post 17 August 2020

I’m not a huge fan of the #SouthgateCentre, built in 1992, though I can see that it has historic interest as the first element of the complete transformation of the south bank area from industrial to hyper commercialism, and its #Postmodern, but not terribly exciting pomo; designed but very commercial firm of #BuchanLairdAndBawden, it’s got bluestone and some classical bits, but it’s just a slightly decorated #shoppingcentre. And the interiors are rather dull. So I’m not manning the barricades now that ‘ARA Asset Management’ want to replace it with what looks like 5 levels of waterfront dining, and an office tower (maybe that’ll change I mean offices won’t fill again too quickly…)

Update 2024: it was approved in Dec 2021, then sold to ESR in early 2022, who last year said they were focussing on upgrades, so I guess it’s off.
