State Government Offices modernism doesn’t need palm trees.

The #StateGovernmentOffices at 1 Macarthur Street were completed in 1966; the design by #YunckenFreeman famously won a competition despite not putting the tower behind the #OldTreasury as they were supposed to, but this is of course the better solution. The State Chemistry Lab behind added in 1969 is in a far more solid #precastconcrete form, forming a backdrop. The plazas used to be totally empty and I was told that the slabs were deliberately too thin to support any grass, but they’ve been landscaped twice since the 90s, and the planting changed at least 3 times, I’ve only just noticed there’s palms in front of the tower now, it’s a bit cluttered really….
