Concrete club in Bulleen; another Smrekar triumph

Repost this day 2018:

The simply wonderful 1972 #VenetoClub in Bulleen by Italian/Slovenian Australian architect #ErminSmrekar, whose work was quite outside the mainstream of Australian architecture in the 70s and early 80s. From the beginnings in the late 60s he showed a love of geometry like the quarter circle elements seen here, as a well as concrete cantilevers and 45* angled forms, and in this case geometric patterns worked right into the #offformconcrete beams. Decorative #brutalist ? And #chaindrains too, avoiding nasty downpipes. The most interesting bits of the club building are a bit obscured now, with a huge arched port cochere thing across the front, and big extensions out back, but there still plenty visible. The lift is quite #spaceage, but I’m told that was slotted in later within the spiral stairs.
