Eek just imagine ! From the #VictorianRailways newsletter April 1969. The plan was for tower blocks like the #GasAndFuelTowers to be built over all the Jolimont railyards and replacing #FlindersStreetStation ! The railways had control of the air space and didn’t need planning permission.
But it was expensive to do, and by the time they started to finalise plans in the early 70s, opinion had shifted and the station was increasingly seen as delightful rather than ugly. Thank goodness ! Image from #metrotrains twitter account.

Maybe it would have been ok, with groovy mirrored towers, or maybe it would have been just windswept plazas. Last pic mine from c1996 just before the big brown things were demolished.
