Edith Ingpen, early female architect

3 October 2019:

Rather plain, but important as one of the few places built before WW2 designed by a female architect – a #blockofflats in George St #EastMelbourne, built 1933, designed by Edith Ingpen, the first woman to graduate from the Uni Melb course, and I think the only sole #femalearchitect working in Victoria in the 30s (others worked in partnerships or big firms). Only other designs identified are her own holiday house (a ten sided /circular thing near Warragul, added to the VHR last year), and a nice deco house in North Balwyn, but there must be others. Long thin block, rear apartments have rear or side balcs. No idea what KALING P means or it might be KALIN G P (update its Kalingra, though still don’t know what that is). A rear flat with no views sold for a $mill in 2014.

  1. Re the name Kalingra, it seems to be of Indian origin, though I don’t know what connection there would have been between Edith Ingpen & India?? The name actually refers to watermelon seed!
