George’s Store

Original post 9 February 2016:

Readers Feast is leaving the main floor of the old Georges building. This is one of the many spaces in the City that has no interior protection, because the City of Melbourne has dragged its feet on listing ANY interiors. And Heritage Victoria has been sitting on a nomination since 1996. The grand building has been through many iterations, with the c1907 Edwardian interior replaced by a stylish 1939 one, refurbished away in the 80s, then comprehensive redone (again) in 1997 for the last try at an exclusive store (when the Edwardian walk through windows were replaced by something liket he 1884 shopfronts), which failed and became offices upstairs and retail downstairs in 2002. The bones of the main floor survive though, with great cast-iron columns and brick arched walls, and the 1940 Art Deco stairs.
