Original post 22 February 2020:
This is a curious one – Georgian Court in George Street East Melbourne started life as a set of 1871 terraces, which was turned into 6 flats in 1928. It got a rather rustic Arts & Crafts look, designed by PJW Murfett, and only the cornice was left intact.
But then it had another makeover, maybe in the 1950s, making it look more Georgian (hence the name ?), though some of the details were re-Victorianised. I think it ended up much nicer.
It was a bed and breakfast by the 90s, that funny stair looks very much that period, but there’s also one surviving Victorian stair. From relatively recent review photos of what’s now operating as a small hotel, it seems to be full of chintzy vaguely Victorian looking furniture, all very 70s-80s olde-worlde taste.
