24 February 2021:
So stylish – the 1933 facade of Buckley & Nunn’s meanswear store, designed by #BatesSmartMcCutcheon, who had done the traditional style main building next door 22 years earlier. Lots of glass and chrome, terribly Modernistic for the time, and included great coloured faience panels up top depicted the modern gent playing golf, nightclubbing, and – on Safari in New York ? A bit aspirational. The only thing is, it’s mostly black, and faces south, so always look dark, and hard to photograph. But fine. 1st image mine, 2018, B&W from the book ‘150 years of Bates Smart’ (available on issu), close up of the panels Peter Maltezos via Urban.com.

5 January 2018:
Delightful Art Deco timber detailing of the lifts installed in 1933 into the Edwardian #BuckleyandNunn department store (#DavidJones since 1986), designed by #BatesSmartMcCutcheon. In about 2010 they were disassembled and installed in new lift shafts at the side of the building (where they’re a bit hidden) rather than the middle. Last pic is 2016, showing how marked they were before the move. The marble and chrome lift surrounds are pretty good too, but my photo is bad. Anyway, you should make the effort to have a look!
