Marvellous Modernist Church, St John’s Bentleigh

Original post 1 March 2021:

So excited to see that St Johns Anglican Bentleigh (completed 1962, designed by Gawler Churcher & Drummond) is proposed to be #heritagelisted by Glen Eira Council (Update: now listed, including most original interior features). The @theageaustralia article quoted the vicar’s warden as thrilled to be so honoured (but worried about future internal changes) – better than opposing ! This is a case where the interior is better than the exterior. It’s all a #googie wonder of stylised angular and decorative Gothic forms, lots of timber and steel details, plus a walk-in baptismal font (lit by a skylight under the spire, the legs of which frame it). Outside there’s the spiky rocket-like spire, and angular side arcades that have mosaic lower parts (a bit hidden by shrubs). Very intact. 2nd and 3rd pics The Age.
