Original post 2 April 2019:
The former #FaradayStreetStateSchool was built in 1876 and has so many #damntrees in front you can hardly see it! Great #polychromebrick #GothicRevival design by #JosephReedArchitect, one of the many 1872 completion winners for schools when Victoria started free and compulsory education. This was the only one of this design built though, except for three single storey versions which arnt nearly as nice. Like most of these schools, the original narrow windows have mostly been replaced so long ago you can’t tell anymore. Supposedly inspired by the famous 1850s University Museum Oxford, but this is far more #picturesque. Refurbished in 2015 as the #Carlton #communitycentre, named after Kathleen Syme, a noted journalist/editor (one of those Symes) and champion of women’s education.
