Natty factory

Natty factory

April 2026

Very stylish factory out west in Tottenham that came up on Facebook as a magazine article from 1940, which got responses that it was still there ! Though somewhat altered.

It was designed by Stuart P Calder with Reid & Pearson, best known for Moderne classics McPhersons in Collins Street and the Hawthorn Footy oval grandstand. This one pretty good too, with that semi-circular glass block entrance, flanked by a clock tower (with water tank).

The reason it’s still there is it’s been heritage listed since … well, for a while. It’s now in the middle of SCF Shipping, and the factory floor parts have been demolished, and a new thing plonked in front of the main long frontage, but you can see the tower from the entrance gate. @library_vic has a zillion colour slides from c1960 showing endless pumps.

The FB page is ‘Melbourne Australia for Time Travellers’, mostly taken from old magazines. The last 2 pics are by Graeme Butler, 1999, showing the glass bricks sadly gone and an ugly verandah, now give judging from the google maps view.
