Better before

Better before

July 2026

This one has loads of character outside, not so much inside – it’s 182 Fitzroy Street Fitzroy. Originally a pair of narrow terraces, it was turned into a church hall in 1908 for a group called Christian Endeavour, then it was used 1946-54 by the Methodist Aboriginal Mission. I think it might have been light industrial after that. Then it was then rearranged again to become a house in c1977, and in the 2000s used as a location for Jack Irish.

I posted this when it was sold in 2018, when it was mostly still the 70s design, with lots of brick and timber etc. It had a large courtyard with a window wall made of rescued Victorian windows incl one fabbo stained glass one, recycled brick paving and walls, exposed timber structure and a Victorian style stair (rescued or retro ?).

It went up for sale in 2022, and again now, and my view is it’s been ruined, everything is stark white now, the windows industrial style, even the courtyard feels barer. But maybe some of you like it better now ? I thought I’d try a poll ! Was it better before ?
