Neptune Street is a narrow St Kilda road running parallel to the much grander Robe Street, and it’s lined with cottages – on a heritage walk by StKilda Historical Society a very long time ago they said ‘the servants had to live somewhere nearby’. Which they did if they didn’t live-in, but of course people of all sorts would have lived here.
There’s a bunch of Victorian timber cottages, including the first one which might be early given the very nice timber fretwork. The house pair with the wonderfully decrepit Edwardian fence may also be early. There’s some later houses too and flats, it is St Kilda after all. And there newer houses, a pointy one behind a tree I think by Geoff Sargent, and boxy ones behind a timber Victorian. The view up the sloping street leads the eye to the great 1920s campanile of Sacred Heart.
The street turns a corner into Neptune Lane, where there’s a pair of plain houses, possibly converted stables, completely covered in ivy. Then on the corner of Robe there’s a pair of Victorian houses with unfeasibly tall chimneys, nice cast iron, and a big tortured something tree.
