The Rand, on Marine Parade in St Kilda, relatively early flats built 1917, and designed by Tompkins & Tompkins – they also did the Canterbury over near the ex St Kilda Station (last pic) in 1914, which also has a circular turret, which makes for a great view spot or dining table. This one is on an angular block which leads to some wild floor plans. The windows have been variously altered, the ground floor going for aluminium, neat but they just don’t have the subtlety of timber ones.
Storey of Melbourne 
I lived in the Canterbury in 1996/97. It was an amazing place to live. It was owned by an ancient lawyer named Richard Trebilcock. I think the rent for the entire floor was $70 a week. Mick Turner of The Dirty Three lived upstairs from me; two of the other flats were musicians also. he owned the house next door as well which I ended up living in as it was inevitable, developers moved in and bought the Canterbury for $700,000.
