Colton Court, St Kilda

Colton Court, St Kilda

St Kilda has an awful lot of nice walk-up flats, in fact along with Elwood it saw the most built in the interwar years in all of Melbourne, changing its character completely. Often higher density than other suburbs, built closer to the street, filling the block, but filled with charm like this one in Barkly Street, built c1930. Update : they were first advertised as ‘Modern Flats’ in Nov 1927.

It’s got 4 one beds per floor, all with sun rooms (originally ‘sleep-outs’ ie balconies for hot nights), and lovely double doors to them and back to the bedroom too, so you can open it right up. Youd think maybe a good model for new housing, bit regulations mean you have to have a lift, and the market usually demands parking too. But the new mid rise code for the activity centre zones pretty much allows this shape.
