Queen Anne terrace house

Queen Anne terrace house

September 2026

If you’re a fan of cast iron lace like I am, you’ll be interested to see this c1900 terrace Wellington Parade Sth, Jolimont – the balustrade and frieze above are examples of the Edwardian fashion for lace that looked like wrought iron, flat panels of curly rods, with a hint of Art Nouveau. The top frieze even has little knobs imitating the ties of actual wrought iron. The lower frieze is more ordinary floral cast iron. (Update : some 1891 Queen Anne terraces in Cecil Street Sth Melbourne have exactly the same balustrade panels, except flat – and they’re by Sydney Smith & Ogg, who also loved the style, so maybe this is by them in c1891).

It seems to be less interesting inside, pics from when it sold past year which show openings either side of the fireplace which would not be original. My pics are March 2024.

  1. Terrace houses were a wonderful and attractive compromise between large, free standing houses and dense blocks of flats. But they were generally built with unified designs and materials. However the lace work is beautiful and the front garden is essential.
