Calabria, Brighton, 1886

Calabria, Brighton, 1886

One of two big mansions on Church Street on top of the small hill east of the #MiddleBrighton railway station. Another towered mansion, in #redbrick #Italianate form, but with hints of #gothicrevival in the window arches, and the prominent #gable ends. All details painted white, just as they have been probably since the 1950s. Original … Continue reading Calabria, Brighton, 1886

The Gatwick vs The Block

The Gatwick vs The Block

October 2018 For anyone who watched #TheBlock2018, here’s a reminder of what the inside of the #TheGatwickHotel looked like before they demolished it all in order to create empty shells for the contestants to decorate. I’m still fuming that the @CityOfPortPhillip didn’t lift a finger to try to save any of this (and the perfectly … Continue reading The Gatwick vs The Block

St Columbas, Elwood, 1929, AA Fritsch

St Columbas, Elwood, 1929, AA Fritsch

One of the many many #redbrick #Romanesque/#Byzantine/#Gothic #CatholicChurches designed by the wonderfully named #AugustusFritsch, aka #AAFritsch. If you see a church like that anywhere in Victoria it’s probably his, or maybe #FritschandFritsch, in partnership with his son. His first churches were in this style, nicely eclectic Edwardian in the 1900s, which he barely changed for … Continue reading St Columbas, Elwood, 1929, AA Fritsch

St Kilda Public Library, Enrico Taglietti, 1973.

St Kilda Public Library, Enrico Taglietti, 1973.

19 October 2018 The St Kilda Library was designed by Enrico Taglietti, and built 1971-73. Often called #Brutalist cos of the #offformconcrete, I’d say it’s really an interpretation of #FrankLloydWright, with all that horizontality and #batteredwalls, but it’s a great interpretation! Love the wacky angled gap/windows and the attention to detail. Tagleitti was an Italian … Continue reading St Kilda Public Library, Enrico Taglietti, 1973.

Federation Square heritage listing #1

Federation Square heritage listing #1

So #FederationSquare has been confirmed by #HeritageVictoria as having state heritage significance, which should mean no Apple Store ! This might be subject to an appeal, but unless the State Government intervenes to overturn it I'm sure it will be confirmed, and that should mean the Apple store won't happen, unless they just go into … Continue reading Federation Square heritage listing #1

Queens College Melbourne University

Queens College Melbourne University

October 2018 One of the many big colleges built on reserved land on a big curve around the top of the Uni. This one was the #Methodist / Wesleyan reserve. It’s impressive but plain and that tower is a bit top heavy; I see now that it’s got a whole extra tall top level that … Continue reading Queens College Melbourne University

Queens College Laboratories

Queens College Laboratories

Behind the main building at #QueensCollegeMelbourne is this curious thing, a #laboratories building, built in 1930 in a sort of Deco-Tudor style, with an octagonal lantern, like a mini-cathedral ! Great #typeface, I suppose #GothicScript. Paid for by the great 30s philanthropists the Nicholas brothers, of Aspro wealth, also practicing Methodists, hence this structure, rebuilding … Continue reading Queens College Laboratories

Queens College Principals Residence

Queens College Principals Residence

16 October 2018: This is the Principle’s Residence at #QueensCollegeMelbourne, probably the one built for their new Professor of Theology, Rev Calvert Barber, in 1938, and designed by #HarryNorris. Gives you some idea of how spacious the whole #MelbourneUniversity campus was before WW2, scattered buildings with lots of staff houses, and lots of lawn and … Continue reading Queens College Principals Residence

Queens College – the Queen Victoria Hospital fence.

Queens College – the Queen Victoria Hospital fence.

October 2018 The plain, sturdy #castironfence at #QueensCollege #MelbourneUniversity isn’t original - it’s actually from the #QueenVictoriaHospital, a huge Edwardian complex which originally occupied a whole block of Lonsdale Street in the #MelbCBD, demolished bit by bit in the 90s, made me so mad, anyway the fence, dating from 1915, found a new home here … Continue reading Queens College – the Queen Victoria Hospital fence.
