High Victorian on Fitzroy Street

High Victorian on Fitzroy Street

8 April 2020

Anywhere else and the elaborate #VictorianShop on the right would be a stand out, but next to the other big things at the corner of #FitzroyStreetStKilda and Grey Street, and with a huge sign on top, it gets overlooked.

The style is very #highvictorian, so prob 1888-1891, other than that I don’t know much. It was a confectioners in the 40s shown in the old postcard – I’m told that by the 70s it was a milk bar, and it’s been a (crappy looking and expensive) convenience store since I’ve known the street from the 90s, so a continuous similar use. Upstairs is for rent right now !

Update 2026:

St Kilda Historical Society newsletter notes that it was probably built in 1883, as a fruit shop for Esther Zuckerman, who lived upstairs with her brother David until WW1. They were French and probably Jewish, arriving in 1850 as children. David built some grand terraces further down the street in 1890, designed by Nahum Barnet, maybe he designed this too.

Also, the convenience store is gone (it was awful) and seems to be a hairdresser upstairs now.
