Repost this day 2019, when it was for sale – presumably someone enjoying it right now !
Some early #Brutalism – the #McNichollHouse, #SouthYarra, 1959-63, by Grounds & Boyd. Theres the Caroline Street side you mostly see in photos, I’ve always thought it looked like a block of flats, turns out to be the back, a stack of bedrooms, and it’s two storeys and gardens on the other side. Rather interesting but severe, vertical stacks of castle-like ins and outs, all in #concreteblock, very much a return to solidity after the structural experiments of the 50s. Designed it seems by #RoyGrounds, who did some more conc block houses in Canberra at the same time, but construction overseen by #RobinBoyd, c1962-3, about the time they fell out over the Arts Centre and Grounds left the partnership. It’s all charmingly nestled in planting on the Gordon Grove side, and cozy inside too, albeit extended and rearranged. The current lounge /dining was the carport (!), I think what’s now the master bed suite upstairs was the lounge/kitchen/dining. It’s been variously altered inside, all sympathetic (except the stair balustrade). Lots of conc block and pale timber walls and timber lined ceilings.
