Punt Road Oval Grandstand

29 September 2019:

Punt Road Oval #grandstand is not protected, and Richmond determined to demolish. It’s quite old, built 1914, the left bit added 1927, v old school, timber structure with posts right in front, other old ones nicer, but it’s not bad.

Richmond hopes to replace it with a whiz bang new one one, but need extra $. B&W pic is 1949, a crowd of 40,000 watching a game against Carlton.

Update 2021: late last year they released a new design, a bit with the look of the existing, but need to raise $30m to do it. All photos the internet.

Update Sept 2023:

Early 2022 the City of Melbourne permitted the redevelopment despite just placing a heritage overlay on the stand, no doubt swayed by the plans showing that the stand was in the way of the need/wish to make the oval as large as the MCG, plus create of lot of new facilities. The design has changed again to be more traditional, which I like more. They still need to raise funds so nothings happened yet.
