Warehouse later Ryzman & Co, Flinders Lane

Warehouse later Ryzman & Co, Flinders Lane

Original post March 2016:

A remarkable survivor, an 1850s #warehouse in the eastern end of #flinderslane in chunky #renaissancerevival style, love the #rustication. Designed (probably) by #RobertsonandHale, 1857, for Levy Brothers. There’s a very faint #ghostsign for Higson & Son; that side is #HigsonLane (which wasn’t named until the 1920s). There was another ancient fading sign that said Ryzman & Co, now faded away and mostly painted over – the Ryzman family bought it in 1945 for $13,000 and presumably still own it; in the 35 years I’ve been passing by I’ve only seen the door open once and an old man going in – there (was) another ancient fading sign that said Ryzman & Co, now mostly painted over – perhaps I saw Mr Ryzman ? Photos of the side, sign and stair from #heritagevictoria.

Update : I’m told old Mr Ryzman died in 2008, and a son kept the business going to 2015.

  1. I worked at Ryzman & co for half a year in the late 80’s, it was a workwear company. They had their own brand Rytwear.
In the basement was where the bulk material bales were stored and they were picked up by Bruce and taken to his commune/factory where they were made into work shirts and pants.
The ground floor was where most of the stock was held , upstairs was where the slower moving stock was. We used mainly brown paper and string to make parcels and send them out.
It was a very dusty place and was sweeping most afternoons, I went up onto the roof a couple times. The was/is a goods lift that went to all three floors.
It was run by Dov Ryzman and Hymie, both elderly gents back then.
It was my first real job after high school.
