Original post 21 February 2020 Finally got a good shot of this fine elliptical #portico; part of Wyndham, a 1927 #blockofflats which has this portico as entrance and shared balcony overlooking their generous lawn, where I often see families with kids picnicking or even having parties. It faces another block that also has a side … Continue reading Wyndham, St Kilda, 1927

Prince of Wales Hotel not quite white
Original post 21 February 2020 #nofilter. I assume they meant it to just be white, but it’s come out a rather yellow white- I guess needed an undercoat on top of that pale ochre ! Which might have been the original colour? I think I like this colour more though. #PrinceOfWalesHotelStKilda Photo 22 October 2019
Late Deco in West St Kilda
Original post 19 February 2020 Photos 1 December 2019 This place in #CowderoyStreet, #StKildaWest looks very typical 1930s #ArtDeco, but it’s 1947 ! Designer unknown. But might actually be earlier ? Ground and first floor are 4 spacious three bed flats, clearly for well off families / empty nesters who didn’t want a house, but … Continue reading Late Deco in West St Kilda
A missing window in Albert Park
Original post 19 February 2020 Photo 16 November 2019 I wonder if a window has been filled in (I think I can see a vague outline) and what if anything was exchanged here ? #AlbertParkVillage. And here's proof from an insta follower :
Ex-bank, St Kilda.
Original post 18 February 2020 Photos 3 December 2019 I pass this nearly every day on the way to the shops or the tram - and now I finally know that yes it was built as a bank like I thought. Designed by #ReedHendersonAndSmart and built 1890 (the year #JosephReedArchitect died of ‘inanition’) it was … Continue reading Ex-bank, St Kilda.
Postmodernism in Kensington
18 February 2020 Photos 8 December 2019 A bit of wacky full-bore #postmodernism in Bellair Street Kensington; I guess someone changed a shopfront (hopefully not original) into this, with symmetry, glass blocks, a bit of classical rustication undermined by just floating in the opening. Very tall proportions which I assume is original and a function … Continue reading Postmodernism in Kensington
Beaumaris Modern No 1 – 1953, but extended a lot
Original post 23 October 2019 The Eidlitz House, 1953, Hocking Warren & Associates; lovely, simple, very 50s, #skillionroofs, plywood, timber framed #windowwalls, but turns out not as original as it looks. The house was a rectangular #smallhomesservice thing, facing north, with a 60s extension one end, which has been extended again; but the whole kitchen … Continue reading Beaumaris Modern No 1 – 1953, but extended a lot
Spanish style in St Kilda, Aston Court, Acland Street
Original post 23 October 2019 So many nice things spotted behind gardens on my walk to the beach. #stkildalife. Like this one, Aston Court, in #AclandStreet, created in 1926 EJ & CL Ruck - by transforming a Victorian house, keeping the huge front garden. These photos are from a 2016 sale ad, it sold for … Continue reading Spanish style in St Kilda, Aston Court, Acland Street
Wertheim shopfront, Lyric House, Collins Street, 1931
27 September 2016 but photos 2024: Lyric House was built as the home of Wertheim’s, Australia’s largest purveyor of pianos - most were manufactured in their Richmond factory, the building that later became #Channel9. This image from the RVIA journal Sept 1931 (looks rather retouched), shows the base which includes great sculpted terracotta figures of … Continue reading Wertheim shopfront, Lyric House, Collins Street, 1931
The Step Sisters of Elizabeth Street
Original post 17 February 2020 I’m going to have to change my title for upper elizabeth street from #fivestepsisters to #sixstepsisters - the next one in the gap between 1 & 2 is under construction- annoyingly it’s only 55 levels, much shorter than the 65-75 of the other towers - apparently it was ‘too tall’ … Continue reading The Step Sisters of Elizabeth Street
