2 April 2021 A big house on a small site on #FerrarsPlace, #SouthMelbourne, built in 1901, originally called ‘#Arrou’, and designed by #WilliamSalway, in a pretty usually style. It basically #Edwardian style, with the red brick and that single large terra cotta, bit there’s many unusual details - the classical bits are quite QueenAnne, like … Continue reading Unusual Edwardian house, South Melbourne (with some Australian Ballet history).
Swanston Street clock was a State Bank ad !
Witty ad for the #StateBankofVictoria way up the blank side of their c1960 office block on #SwanstonStreet on the corner of Little Bourke. The watch was a working clock which is still there ! (not working though). There’s a fuss right now about #VCAT approving some kind of projected ad here over the objections of … Continue reading Swanston Street clock was a State Bank ad !
Gold Rush era in South Melbourne
A very curious house in #RaglanStreet #SouthMelbourne, which is also a bit #wonky; perhaps 1850s #goldrush period, being built right on the street and simple classical details. Perhaps lost a bit of parapet.
Railway Footbridge Hampton Station.
I do love the complicated bolted timber structure of these #railwayfootbridge-s; this one’s at #HamptonStation. No idea of date, could be 1880s or 1900s.
We Won ! no Apple Store in Fed Sq !
The #AppleStore at #FederationSquare is off ! I didn’t think the #heritagelisting idea would work but it did ! The Minister could have intervened but didn’t, phew! And they never actually showed us what it would look like from within the square, only this ghostly image from just off the riverside walk. Great work @ourfedsquare … Continue reading We Won ! no Apple Store in Fed Sq !
Pink Lake Westgate Park
So #WestgateParkLake has been pink for two months ! A bit of a #touristattraction, sort of #disastertourism, cos it’s only pink because of low rainfall and algae in a #saltlake environment, though not really a disaster I guess since the lake is #manmade anyway. #WestgatePark was first established in 1985 on the #WestgateBridge works site … Continue reading Pink Lake Westgate Park
Another old lift, repurposed
These are the #oldlifts at the #HotelWindsor, prob from the 1920s but nobody seems to know. Im fascinated by the twisted, woven and curled #wroughtiron screen; theres only two others I know of in central Melbs (the #birdcagelift at 107 Flinders Lane, and at the Melb Club). This one has decorative solid panel interiors (ignore … Continue reading Another old lift, repurposed
Exhibition Boot Co
26 September 2015 Delightful! The Exhibition Boot Co in #BourkeStreet, near Russell, built 1904, designed by William Webb, with that fantastic sunburst motif - is it an early Australian #risingsun ? nothing to do with shoes anyway. Became Coons Shoes by the 20s, all painted white by 1937, then brownish (Graeme Butler, 1984), restored by … Continue reading Exhibition Boot Co
Snidest & Abraham, Edwardian Tobacco, facaded.
Original post 23 March 2019 (changed since then !): A rather nice Edwardian warehouse on #LonsdaleStreet built in c1904 for Sniders & Abraham Tobacco to go with their warehouses in the lane behind. Just saw scaffolding, don’t know what for, no planning applications, fortunately it got #heritagelisted last year, so presumably nothing drastic. It’s called … Continue reading Snidest & Abraham, Edwardian Tobacco, facaded.
Caulfield Town Hall, started, stopped, finished off differently
29 March 2019 Caulfield Town Hall is an amalgam of an 1884 design by Sydney Smith, built but not rendered and without the tower, then a partial first floor was added in 1890. It was finally finished off in 1931 with more first floor, rendering, and the portico and the hall itself added, all in … Continue reading Caulfield Town Hall, started, stopped, finished off differently
