15 October 2024 There’s a fantastic little precinct of mid century modern houses in Bellaire Court in Beaumaris, all developed by the same builder in a similar style, and the best news is the 8 houses were recommended for listing as part of the City of Bayside post was heritage review, approved by Council in … Continue reading Beaumaris Modern – Max Sachs

Beaumaris Modern No 4 – Bricknell House 1952
Original post 23 October 2019 Another @beaumaris_modern house from Sunday, the Bricknell House, 1952. Charles Bricknell worked for #YunckenFreeman when they were still smallish, doing modern houses after their Georgian period, and this one is full of quirks - I liked it but somehow not a lot. Great rounded timber columns allowing that full #windowwall, … Continue reading Beaumaris Modern No 4 – Bricknell House 1952
Beaumaris Modern No 2 – 60s style from 2016
Original post 20 October 2019 Rather extraordinary house - part of the @beaumaris_modern open day that completely channels the 60s, with I think a fair dose of Sydney 60s guru #NevilleGruzman, lots of beams and black gridded #steelframedwindows. Designed by @zenibaker, complex 2016. I thought it was great ! Very livable, gardens out every window, … Continue reading Beaumaris Modern No 2 – 60s style from 2016
Georgian Revival in East Melbourne
Original post 22 February 2020 Photos 3 October 2019 This set of 1860 terraces in George Street #EastMelbourne was given a Georgian makeover in 1929, it seems by just replacing the verandah with a nice portico. Pretty flowers. Not sure if flats or always a small hotel (which at the moment gets terrible reviews).
Apartment ’tower’, Elwood
Original post 22 February 2020 Photos 22 July 2018 A tower with a #blockofflats attached, or is it the other way round ? ‘La Torelle’, a rather quirky design in #BrightonRoadElwood by #WHMerritt, c1935. Seems the tower was originally open on top, and at least one flat has a great fireplace and another a great … Continue reading Apartment ’tower’, Elwood
ES&A Bank, Glenferrie Road, Malvern, 1959
Original post 22 September 2019 I remember passing by this in #GlenferrieRoadMalvern as a kid - guess it was so unusual it made an impression ! Built 1959 as an #ESandAbank, designed by #StuartMcIntosh, their in house architect who did a number of other outstanding ones (including Moe if anyone is ever there!). I went … Continue reading ES&A Bank, Glenferrie Road, Malvern, 1959
A modernist landmark in need of some TLC.
Original post 21 February 2020. A bit shocked to see the state of the 1959 #ESandABank in #GlenferrieRoad (and also that the fins seem to be made of plywood), but they’re currently repairing the roof so maybe the rest will follow ? Hmm just thinking if this were say Germany there’d be grants available, an … Continue reading A modernist landmark in need of some TLC.
Wyndham, St Kilda, 1927
Original post 21 February 2020 Finally got a good shot of this fine elliptical #portico; part of Wyndham, a 1927 #blockofflats which has this portico as entrance and shared balcony overlooking their generous lawn, where I often see families with kids picnicking or even having parties. It faces another block that also has a side … Continue reading Wyndham, St Kilda, 1927
Prince of Wales Hotel not quite white
Original post 21 February 2020 #nofilter. I assume they meant it to just be white, but it’s come out a rather yellow white- I guess needed an undercoat on top of that pale ochre ! Which might have been the original colour? I think I like this colour more though. #PrinceOfWalesHotelStKilda Photo 22 October 2019
Late Deco in West St Kilda
Original post 19 February 2020 Photos 1 December 2019 This place in #CowderoyStreet, #StKildaWest looks very typical 1930s #ArtDeco, but it’s 1947 ! Designer unknown. But might actually be earlier ? Ground and first floor are 4 spacious three bed flats, clearly for well off families / empty nesters who didn’t want a house, but … Continue reading Late Deco in West St Kilda
