Original post 22 October 2019 Here’s a shining example of the kind of thing permitted during the 10ish year period when almost anything was allowed in the CBD. Only seen this one in #LittleLonsdale near Queen from a distance, wasn’t sure what it was - it’s an Ibis hotel, finished last year, and has given … Continue reading When there are no controls, this happens

Beaumaris Modern No 5
Original post 22 October 2019 Dearie House, #Beaumaris, #KevinKnightArchitect, 1953; extensions by #mathewgreen. Knight worked for #OakleyAndParkes. My favourite of the @beaumaris_modern open day houses, I guess because the original house a kind of rustic Modern, with very simple lines, exposed rafters, #roughsawn vertical boards, and projecting north facing lounge with corner window. Also while … Continue reading Beaumaris Modern No 5
Linden, Acland Street, 1870
Original post 27 February 2020 Linden in #AclandStreet is quite a survivor! While all around it were converted to flats, or demolished and replaced by flats, and St Kilda went from exclusive residential, to flats, and then cheap flats, the Michaelis family, who had built it in 1870, stayed on ! It was designed by … Continue reading Linden, Acland Street, 1870
Hidden heritage in St Kilda No 2
Original post 27 February 2020 Repost 2020: St Kilda still surprises - another hidden mansion ! Behind the Spanish style flats at 39 #AclandStreet, there’s a completely intact big house, pretty much the same as the one next door, no 41, but that one never got flats built in the front yard. Both built by … Continue reading Hidden heritage in St Kilda No 2
Wardle x 2 in Collingwood
Original post 26 February 2029 Photos 21 November 2019 The area of #Collingwood around Wellington and Langdrige just keeps getting denser, to CBD fringe levels; this is an office building by #JohnWardle, it’s ok, a shiny bronze glass #curtainwall, but I read it’s supposed to be 6*, which is something. Also it’s end of trip … Continue reading Wardle x 2 in Collingwood
Theobalds Buildings, 1909, Bridge Road, Richmond
Original post 26 February 2020 Not ashamed to admit it - I love these guys ! The name just adds to my already great delight. Built 1909 for Richmond Theobald, tea merchant. #BridgeRoadRichmond. #TheobaldsBuildings. Very similar to a pair in Brunswick St, perhaps the sane architect.
Skipping Girl viewlines
Original post 24 February 2020 So the building the #SkippingGirlSign is on is on a separate title from the bit with the Deco tower just beyond; and it’s the closer bit that being sold soon, which is #heritagelisted, so they’ll have to keep at least 10m depth of it (preferably all of it!) but then … Continue reading Skipping Girl viewlines
Stanford Block, Richmond, 1880s
Original post 25 February 2020 The Stanford Block, Bridge Road, Richmond; almost certainly 1880s, and largely untouched, not painted, not even one, maybe single owner until the 80s ? Nice #polychromebrick, even still has its knobs. Only thing is one set of windows partly bricked in, but easily reversible. Thought these might be by #JohnBeswicke, … Continue reading Stanford Block, Richmond, 1880s
Deco flats – bit too close for comfort
Original post 25 February 2020 Cute Deco flats in #FitzroyStreetStKilda, BUT the two halves are so close together! Check out those balconies down the back, you could lean out and touch the other one ! As far as I can work out, they’re the stairs, but still, there’s lounge rooms facing each other only like … Continue reading Deco flats – bit too close for comfort
Not Skipping Girl, Handley & Co, designed by Alder & Lacey, 1938
Original post 23 February 2020 This is the factory next to the factory that the #SkippingGirlSign is on, and I’m very chuffed to have just found via Trove old newspaper searches that this was built in 1938, and the architects were #AlderAndLacey. Even though I helped get the sign on the Heritage Register, nobody ever … Continue reading Not Skipping Girl, Handley & Co, designed by Alder & Lacey, 1938
