The #MiddleParkHotel is one of those pubs that’s bigger than a lot of others, more than just a pub really - and also rather less decorated, which is surprising because it’s by #WSLaw, who did some great ornate OTT designs in the #landboom years, including the very grand Grand Hotel in Albert Park which opened … Continue reading Middle Park Hotel, 1889

Another one down in Brighton ☹️
Imagine my delight in finding that concrete pioneer #LeslieMPerrott’s own 1924 house in Newbay Crescent, Brighton is still there ! ...or is it ... nope, replaced in 2016 by a house that takes up the whole block of course, by McKimm architects, interestingly it’s #NeoBrutalist, so the concrete is visible now - and it’s better … Continue reading Another one down in Brighton ☹️
Matchy matchy Victorian cottages.
A set of once matching single-fronted cottages in #MiddlePark - there are actually a lot of these around but they are obscured by the various alterations over the years, in this case only 2 are unpainted but both have high brick fences and only 1 still has the slate roof. A third one has horribly … Continue reading Matchy matchy Victorian cottages.
Rising from the ashes in Middle Park – though not completely…..
First posted Instagram 6 January 2020 The 1906 #MiddleParkStation has finally been rebuilt having been destroyed by fire in early 2018; it was a very popular cafe #mart130, but those operators couldn’t wait this long to get back, so I guess it’s up for lease ? Not quite finished, yet to put back the verandah, … Continue reading Rising from the ashes in Middle Park – though not completely…..
Hotel Alexander, Spencer Street, 1928
Somehow this old hotel makes much less impact than it should; maybe just being on #SpencerStreet means it gets overlooked ? Also, there’s not a lot of interesting detail or grand entry (any more - in fact what was shops is now blank wall!). Built in 1928 as the #HotelAlexander, it’s clearly inspired by the … Continue reading Hotel Alexander, Spencer Street, 1928
Sun Blest, so cute.
2 January 2020 Sun Blest - so very #instagrammable - this #VictorianVilla in #BlessingtonStreet, #StKilda shows what was left after (presumably) a built-in verandah was removed, with the internal paint left. But it also has 50s wrought-iron and funny crazy paved stepped walls, shouldn’t be there if it was built in ....maybe artfully rearranged ? … Continue reading Sun Blest, so cute.
Post Federation almost Bungalow, StKilda
A very nice #postfederation house built in 1920 in #BlessingtonStreet, #Stkilda opposite the #StKildaBotanicalGardens. Combining #ArtsAndCrafts Medievalising elements like the #baywindows and #diamondpanewindows and #halftimbering (also seen in the Federation style but now a bit stylised) and Edwardian Marseilles tiles, with a pair of gabled roofs showing the emerging influence of the #CalifornianBungalow style. A … Continue reading Post Federation almost Bungalow, StKilda
Hidden heritage revealed – Bundalohn, Tennyson Street, St Kilda
Original post 28 December 2019 No it’s not being demolished, it’s being revealed ! They knocked down some ugly 60s flats / hotel units that were in front - though they’re going to build more back, for crisis housing apparently, which will be good to have. Anyway it’s called #Bundalohn, it’s opposite the #StKildaBotanicalGardens, it … Continue reading Hidden heritage revealed – Bundalohn, Tennyson Street, St Kilda
Falconer Terrace, Fitzroy 1866.
#FalconerTerrace, Napier Street,#Fitzroy, 1866, one of the most impressive terraces in Melbs, not because it’s huge or elaborate but because it’s relative simple, but unusual, with a plain upper storey, and a ground level that’s an even arcade with no demarcation between the houses (it’s two arches per house), on solid #bluestone piers. Nice. (But … Continue reading Falconer Terrace, Fitzroy 1866.
St Johns Toorak, Pugin-esque Gothic Revival downunder.
#StJohnsToorak has this amazingly huge spire/tower, attached to an otherwise very low roofed not that big church, with small small windows and doors, the roofs coming way down - I thought maybe the spire was added later to compensate for the small scale but no apparently it’s based on the original 1859 #WilliamWardell design, though … Continue reading St Johns Toorak, Pugin-esque Gothic Revival downunder.
