Original post 13 October 2019 Finally seen the famous #AnatolKagan in #TheodoreCourt #Toorak, an out-there house from 1959 which has fortunately in recent years had two sympathetic owners, bd use it’s not #heritagelisted ☹️yet. What a great spot too, an Ernest Fooks apartment block next door, and a Boyd across the road ! Posted this … Continue reading Anatol Kagan, Toorak, 1959 – ruined
Interwar Gothic at Melbourne Uni
Original post 22 March 2020 Can’t go past without a photo, i guess because it’s quite photogenic! The #ChemistryBuilding at #MelbourneUniversity, completed in 1938, and shows that my fave architect #PercyEverett could do any style, not just Moderne. This is called #CollegiateGothic, which means the kind of medieval/Tudor/Gothic that so many universities used in the … Continue reading Interwar Gothic at Melbourne Uni
Fantastic FLW inspired church near Frankston, 1963
Original post 20 March 2020 Another one that doesn’t disappoint! The #Langwarrin-Pearcedale Anglican Church, built in 1963, and designed by #WystanWiddows and David Caldwell. So pointy, angular, an A Frame, but souped up ! Even the door and the windows continue the angular theme. It’s not big but dominates this dusty intersection, set at 45*. … Continue reading Fantastic FLW inspired church near Frankston, 1963
All that’s left of the Federal Hotel; three of the four seasons.
Original post 15 March 2020 Some #MelbourneFragments - these ladies once graced the exterior of the OTT #FederalCoffeePalace that once stood on the corner of Collins & King streets, one of those things that just seems unreal that it ever existed, and what’s more it was here ! Built in 1888 it had 500 rooms, … Continue reading All that’s left of the Federal Hotel; three of the four seasons.
3 relocated sculptures at McClelland
Original post 18th March 2020 I’m pretty sure this was originally in the Bourke St undercroft of the #StateBankCentre Galleria, where it made more sense, stopping just short of the waffle slab roof (forgot to check artist and date). Still pretty dramatic. The #McClellandSculpturePark is home to lots of #publicart that new building owners didn’t … Continue reading 3 relocated sculptures at McClelland
Not a great replacement in Crossley Lane
Original post 14 October 2020 Someone sent me a photo of the poor abandoned warehouse on the left from above showing it without the roof - but I can’t find it now ... again please ? Also looking back at the council report from 2016 about this, I’m even more annoyed that the owners were … Continue reading Not a great replacement in Crossley Lane
Scottish Amicable to be demolished 😢
Original post 14 October 2019 #Demolition pending ! The very stylish, severe, minimalist, Scottish Amicable on Queen Street, #YunckenFreeman, 1965, which has only just got permanent heritage protection, is proposed to be demolished !! Planning docs for the new tower quotes an engineer's report (which has been peer reviewed) which says the facade is 'in … Continue reading Scottish Amicable to be demolished 😢
Flowing sculpture at McClelland
Original post 19 March 2020 This is great, but I didn’t get the artist or date. I like the setting particularly- a lot of the sculptures just feel plonked on concrete pads or plinths -but this is nice, the flowing lines feeling like water. #McClellandSculpturePark. Update : Douglas Stephens #Pisces, 1983 (it looks very 60s!).
Lenton Parr screen, rough and huge !
Original post 19 March 2020 For some reason this is the thing I most wanted to see at #McClellandSculpturePark - it’s a giant screen, made by #LentonParr for the Customs House office block on the corner of William Street and Flinders Street in 1967 - and it’s great ! Placed where it has a strong … Continue reading Lenton Parr screen, rough and huge !
Frankston Primary, 1889, 1938 + 1945.
Original post 16 March 2020: Frankston Primary School; two stages, both by #PercyEverett, Chief Architect of the #PublicWorksDepartment, and very characteristic, with that horizontal sunshade running all round and through vertical windows, and two tones of brick plus render. I thought the two storey end looked like maybe a good attempt to copy his style … Continue reading Frankston Primary, 1889, 1938 + 1945.
