Original post 28 March 2020 A rather interesting row of four late Edwardian houses in Queens Parade, Clifton Hill, all built the saga tone I expect. Some leaning toward the emerging Bungalow styles, and one that looks like a little block of flats ! Last night be once a dentist. plans of no 3
Ex pub in Queens Parade
Original post 26 March 2020 Cnr Queens Parade and Rushall Crescent North Fitzroy- built as the #NorthcoteArmsHotel in 1853-4, by Wharton & Burns (presumably #GeorgeWharton). Very #ColonialMelbourne, so much finely worked bluestone (but gold rush prices perhaps meant they couldn’t afford it to be entirely in stone). The owner died just before it opened when … Continue reading Ex pub in Queens Parade
Georgian shop top in Fitzroy Street
Original post 24 March 2020 Edmaro, on #FitzroyStreetStKilda, is a finely detailed bit of #GeorgianRevival with a Mediterranean feel, this thin variegated #tapestrybricks giving it more texture than actual Georgian. 1930s, mo architect. I had a freind who lived there once I think, from memory it was a house-sized flat.
Globe Tyres, 1965
Original post 25 March 2020 Photo 3 December 2019 Love the crazy little building near the #QueenVictoriaMarket, but don’t know much about it - obviously 50s or early 60s, but that’s it. Update: it’s 1965, built for #GlobeTyres, architect not known. Old photo, Karl Halla, 1960s. Interior was a bar in the late 90s designed … Continue reading Globe Tyres, 1965
Spanish Flu in Australia, 1919
Original post 25 March 2020 During the Spanish Flu pandemic in 1918-19 in Australia, face masks were compulsory for a while ! And so many things sound the same - first international quarantine, then the states ignored the federal govt, went their own ways, abd closed their borders “as naturally the clean States could not … Continue reading Spanish Flu in Australia, 1919
Shrublands, Canterbury, no expense spared
Original post 25 March 2020 #Shrublands in Canterbury is for sale ! I don’t normally post just real estate pics, but it’s interesting that sometimes an owner goes completely gaga and makes a place more elaborate than it was originally! Built 1863, with probably the first double storey columned loggia in Vic, designed by #JohnFlannagan … Continue reading Shrublands, Canterbury, no expense spared
More shop tops in Bridge Road Richmond
Original post 24 March 2020 Unusually richly elaborated #shoptops in #BridgeRoadRichmond, near Burnley St; same window kefir you detail with lady faces instead if keystones as another shop up on the hill, so same builder or architect. The row was originally red #facebrick but they’ve all been painted differently, the fate of nearly every shop … Continue reading More shop tops in Bridge Road Richmond
Architectural Wallpaper in Flinders Street.
Original post 24 March 2020 Here’s some architecture as #wallpaper, maybe an art project in the coming weeks ? It’s the Rocke Tompsitt & Co druggists #warehouse on #flindersstreet. Always loved the elaborated yet rectangular nature of the #facade, which is very #Victorian #renaissancerevival in style, but it’s 1908 - most likely because the architect … Continue reading Architectural Wallpaper in Flinders Street.
Holyman House, Flinders Street, 1858
Original post 21 March 2020 You might not recognise this but it’s still there ! #HolymanHouse, an unassuming but rare survivor from the 1850s on #FlindersStreet cnr Market Street, originally facing the first river port, hence the adjacent Customs House. Built 1858 for the huge wool exporters #GoldsboroughMort, designed by John Gill, who had been … Continue reading Holyman House, Flinders Street, 1858
Lesser known Roy Grounds in Toorak
Original post 13 October 2019, update 2024 I posted this in 2019 as ‘a lesser known #RobinBoyd’ at 1 #TheodoreCourt #Toorak, 1958. But a recent heritage review by @extentheritage states it was called Shere, and it’s by Roy Grounds, though they don’t say how they know - but they did find the sketch design at … Continue reading Lesser known Roy Grounds in Toorak
